About me and my paintings
I studied science at university rather than art and as a result I only have formal art training up toA-level; thereafter I am self-taught. I am very proud of this because I believe it has allowed me to develop my own style without influence. I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2007 (BSc. Biomedical Sciences) and although I am a Scientist by day, I paint, draw, doodle and sketch in my spare time and will always find time to do so – I could not thrive without it.
My approach to creating art is always with the aesthetic in mind. I don’t mind art that is metaphorical or portrays a message but I still think that it should be pleasing to the eye, or at
least look like a certain amount of time and skill has gone into it. For me, colour, texture and energy are important because I want a painting to have atmosphere or evoke an emotion. I would rather create an expressive interpretation of something than a literal copy; if you prefer the latter then you can simply take a photograph!
I am lucky enough to have visited many countries on many continents, including Mexico, India, Thailand, Morocco and Cambodia to name a few. Because of this, my main source of inspiration is travel, foreign cultures and people from around the world. Artistically I am inspired by Bellany, Kahlo, Cooper, Klein and a great number of other living artists; however, as I continue to develop my own style I (try to) rely on their work less and less for guidance.
